Brexit has made this country mad. It’s lost its bearings, its sense of priorities, its morality. We give airtime to liars and fraudsters. We’ve turned against each other. Our politicians are actively deceiving us for their own ends and so many just don’t care.

Things that will matter in the future: - how corrupt our govt is - how rubbish their public health messaging is - how damaging their ugly Brexit is - how authoritarian they become, to stop us from holding them to account. Things that won’t matter: - when Labour did a reshuffle.

Northern Ireland is a perfect control for the fairly solid economic theory that significantly raising trade barriers to your nearest markets will lead to a significant economic hit. Basically, this is entirely in keeping with all reputable predictions. ft.com/content/3b5059c4-4ef1…

‘What we’ve shown throughout this pandemic is the role we’ve played internationally and that we won’t hesitate to take swift action.’ Full-fat-cynical-double-lie there from Javid on #Marr. Govt cut foreign aid and it’s been the worst public health failure in UK history.

The mega whine-athon triggered by telling people to wear masks in shops and on public transport… is exactly why this country is in such a pitiful mess. Infantile foot-stamping at not being able to just be supremely, cluelessly selfish…

The main problem with swaggering about asserting that you’re all that and will be much better on your own… is that you have a hell of a lot of shouting and blaming to do when you discover you’re not… and that you’ve pissed away the goodwill and the trust you need for solutions.

There’s a really simple question here. If the government accepts that people have the right to claim asylum - which under international law they absolutely do - how does it propose that they come here to apply for it?

In the tantrum of xenophobic entitlement that was Brexit, we managed to add an entirely new border to the others and then lose control of all of them. Because, in the midst of their sovereignty wettie, govt decided that diplomacy, trust, cooperation and compromise didn’t matter.

The PM's approach to the current crisis is exactly the same as Frost's approach to the NI Protocol. All their lives these people have climbed the ladder through bullying rather than merit. This is so often how the British establishment works. 1/4

Publishing a letter to Macron demanding that France take back everyone who tries to come here… is no solution at all. It’s just a letter to his small-minded, xenophobic fanbase telling them he’s happy to humour them, rather than help. And if France doesn’t like it, even better.

And for anyone who thinks Johnson’s dickmove letter is him being strong, think again. We are loathed and distrusted by our nearest neighbours and absolutely nothing good comes from those hostile relationships. You can’t turn thuggish, mean little England into ‘Global Britain’.

Oh Grant Shapps… you snivelling toady…. As if Johnson’s suggestions were made in ‘good faith’. ‘We have to work cooperatively’.. by publishing demands on Twitter for the delight of Daily Mailers… because behaving responsibly and diplomatically is simply beyond us. #r4today
